Apostille and Authentication for Eligible IRS Documents

An IRS document needs review by exact document type. Do not assume every tax form, notice or account printout can receive an apostille.

Is Form 6166 the same as Form 8802?

No. Form 6166 is an IRS certification of U.S. tax residency. Form 8802 is the application used to request that certification. Our service concerns coordination for an eligible document already issued to you; it does not include applying for tax residency certification, an EIN or other IRS records.

Which authority handles eligible IRS documents?

The U.S. Department of State lists IRS tax-residency certification among federal documents that may need an apostille. Its preparation instructions require the appropriate official document and certification. Do not notarize an original federal document as a workaround.

The destination country and receiving institution determine which authentication request should be reviewed. We confirm the proposed route before discussing submission and delivery.

What if I have a tax return, transcript or EIN letter?

Tell us the exact title and how the IRS issued the document. A Form 6166 process should not be assumed to apply to a tax return, transcript or EIN notice. We cannot promise eligibility before review. Ask the recipient what document and certification it will accept.

Start with document details, not sensitive tax information

  • Provide the document name or form number.
  • Identify the destination country and requested use.
  • State whether the document has already been issued.
  • Tell us the deadline and translation requirements.

Do not enter Social Security numbers, tax account credentials or full tax returns in the general inquiry form. Ask our team for instructions if a document copy is needed.
